Meta Acquires AI Wearable Startup Limitless in Strategic Reality Labs Expansion

The social media giant Meta Platforms announced the acquisition of artificial intelligence startup Limitless on December 6, 2025, marking another strategic move in its expanding wearables portfolio. The transaction immediately ends sales of Limitless’s flagship Pendant device as the company integrates the startup’s technology into its Reality Labs division.

Meta Limitless Deal Reshapes Ambient Computing Strategy

Dan Siroker, CEO and co-founder of Optimizely, confirmed the transaction through a corporate announcement, stating the deal aligns with both companies’ vision for personal superintelligence. The acquisition brings Meta a compact AI-powered pendant that records conversations and generates searchable transcripts through a companion application, technology that could enhance the company’s existing Ray-Ban smart glasses and future wearable products.

Financial terms remain undisclosed, though the startup had raised over thirty-three million dollars from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, and NEA. The company, formerly known as Rewind, pivoted from desktop productivity software to hardware last year with its ninety-nine-dollar Pendant device.

Reality Labs Integration Accelerates Development Timeline

The acquired team will join Meta’s wearables organization within Reality Labs, reporting directly to Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth. A company spokesperson stated the organization is excited that the team will help accelerate work on AI-enabled wearables, though specific product integration timelines were not provided.

This strategic acquisition follows Meta’s recent hiring of Alan Dye, Apple’s longtime user-interface design head, who joins as chief design officer effective December thirty-first. Dye will oversee design for hardware, software, and AI integration, signaling commitment to next-generation consumer devices beyond its successful Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Market Competition Drives Meta Limitless Acquisition Timing

Siroker acknowledged intensifying competition from larger players developing their own hardware devices, including OpenAI’s collaboration with designer Jony Ive on a dedicated AI wearable. The deal eliminates a potential competitor while securing intellectual property for ambient AI capabilities, particularly conversation recording and context retention technologies.

Existing Pendant customers receive support for at least one year and automatic upgrades to the Unlimited Plan at no subscription cost. However, the Rewind desktop application will sunset December nineteenth, with all screen and audio capture disabled. Recording functionality in Desktop and Web applications has been permanently disabled, though previously recorded meetings remain accessible for one year.

The transaction positions the social media giant to compete directly with emerging AI wearable competitors including Friend, Plaud, and Bee, the latter acquired by Amazon in July. As major technology companies race to dominate ambient computing interfaces, this deal demonstrates how established platforms are absorbing innovative startups rather than allowing independent challengers to establish market positions.
